This is a percussion primed, fragmentation, high explosive incendiary (frag-HEI) cartridge. It incorporates either a setback and centrifugally armed, impact fired, point-detonating (PD) fuze (A-30), or a point-detonating self-destroying (PDSD) fuze (B-30). The B-30 self-destroying feature is a setback initiated pyrotechnic delay powder train. The cartridges are used in aircraft cannon.
The lead wire tied to the knob on the base of the projectile body reduces bore fouling and flash when the cartridge is fired. Projectiles fuzed with the A-30 have increased main charge due to the explosive-incendiary pellet placed in the base of the fuze body.
The projectile body is black oxide-coated with a red band painted ahead of the rear bourrelet. The tip of each fuze body is coated with reddish-purple lacquer. The remainder of the cartridge is unpainted. The fuzes have their nomenclature and manufacturing information stamped in the body. Manufacturing information is stamped in the base of the cartridge case.
