This fuze is an instantaneous fuze manufactured by modifying the Mk Ill Fuze (World War I type). Originally designed to overcome the disadvantages of the Mk Ill when used with the reduced charge, or in the low zones of howitzers, the M46 has very satisfactory results with all calibers of guns and howitzers. This fuze is not boresafe since the lower detonator is not positively separated from the booster.
