Description

This high explosive projectile is used for fragmentation, mining and blast.

The projectile consists basically of a forged steel body containing an explosive charge of 14.16 pounds of TNT. A deep fuze cavity in the nose of the projectile contains a supplementary charge of 0.30 pound of TNT in an aluminum liner. The design of the fuze cavity and the presence of the supplementary charge adapt the projectile for use with either proximity, mechanical time or point detonating fuzes. A single rotating band (protected by a grommet during storage and handling) encircles the projectile approximately 3.5 inches forward of the boat-tailed base. The base itself is fitted with a protective cover which gives added assurance that the propellant gases will not penetrate the base.
