The figure shows the appearance and dimensions of the M206 and AMD206 flare, M1 and M839 chaff, and SD-206 simulator cartridges. The M206 and AMD206 flare, and the M1 and M839 chaff, are dispenser fired decoy cartridges. The flare cartridges provide countermeasures against infrared-seeking weapons; the chaff cartridges provide countermeasures against radar-guided weapons. The SD-206 simulator cartridge is used in training ground and aircrews in the ground handling and airborne dispensing of the flare and chaff countermeasures stores.
The M206 flare cartridge is yellow-brown with an embossed F on the end cap. It is marked in black letters FLARE, AIRCRAFT, COUNTERMEASURE, M206 PCMK9311623, and the date loaded and the lot number. The AMD206 flare cartridge is similar in appearance to the M206. However, as currently fielded, it is a preproduction, developmental flare; the markings, handwritten using a black magic marker, are marked AMD206N with the flare lot number. A gray epoxy seals the end cap. The simulator is identical to the M206 flare cartridge except it has a blue end cap with an embossed S. It is marked in black letters SIMULATOR-IR FLARE SD-206 SOS P/N 117053-1, with the NSN and lot number. The M1 and M839 chaff cartridges are translucent gray with black designation markings.
